White Canvas Design – Top 10 Moments of 2018

With 2019 peaking its head around the corner, we can’t help but feel excited for the year ahead – filled with new opportunities, goals and challenges. In order to look forward, it’s important to look back and learn from past experiences. 2018 was full of surprises, exciting collaborations, and epic moments. It was hard to pick just ten (there were so many amazing projects and experiences to choose from), but here’s a look at some of our favourites from 2018.

1. Baby Riley’s arrival

Okay so not all of our top moments are 100% work related, but obviously the arrival of Carly’s baby girl, Riley, in May made the top ten list. Aside from her bringing a completely new level of cuteness onboard, Riley’s arrival brought the need to expand and provided new leadership opportunities to the White Canvas team – hence our big moment #2…

2. New Team Members

Planning for the arrival of a baby can be stressful but planning for it when you are running a business takes things to a whole new level. One thing you learn when becoming a new mom is when you need help, ask for it. Expanding the White Canvas team was that help we needed. 2018 brought some new faces, talent and character to our business that clients welcomed with open arms. Stefani Burr hopped on board in January as Graphic Designer / Brand Specialist to help carry the load and cover for Carly while she took a short maternity leave in May. We also welcomed graphic designer / illustrator Hannah Needham to the team this past summer to expand our services and volume potential.

3. Park Place Seniors Living brand refresh and new website

This year, our long term client Park Place Seniors Living approached us to redesign their corporate website to accommodate their 25+ locations across BC and Alberta. This was the largest project we took on in 2018 (and largest website launch for us to date), complete with a custom, fully responsive WordPress site inclusive of 50+ pages and a full brand refresh for each location. The final launch came only a few days before baby Riley’s arrival but we managed to pull it off thanks to caffeine, strong will and a dedicated team effort.

4. Joey Restaurants

One of the most exciting parts about being in the design industry is meeting new clients and establishing new partnerships. This year we were beyond excited to work with the JOEY Restaurants and Rklix teams in their pursuit to revamp the UX/UI design of their JOEY Pay app, their Concierge online reservation booking system and more. We look forward to further collaborations into 2019, including the launch of their sister brand LOCAL Pay.

5. Alpha Foods New Product Launch – Pot Pies

One of our favourite clients – Alpha Foods definitely deserves a shoutout on this list. We love working with their team in their pursuit of providing plant-based convenience food options and this year they launched their delicious Handheld Pot Pies in stores across the US. We assisted with packaging design project management, website upgrades, and the design of sales materials and marketing collateral. We’ve crossed our fingers that these delicious products will make their way into Canadian grocery stores soon!

6. New Headquarters – Langley, BC

With Carly’s first baby on the way and the WCD headquarters growing too much for the small 2 bedroom condo in Coquitlam, it was time to make the move out to the ‘burbs of Langley. We are now a short 5 minute drive away from each other, with a dream of one day having an official office-front to call our own. For now, coffees in Fort Langley and collaborative white boarding sessions outdoors in the summertime have been working out just fine.

7. Mercer International Rebrand

Mercer International – an integrated pulp, lumber and energy company – collaborated with us this year to overhaul their corporate brand system to be applied to all locations and divisions across Canada and Germany. The brand overhaul included logo designs for 7+ divisions and marketing collateral featuring new business cards, powerpoint templates, letterheads, branding guidelines and more. We also worked with Mercer on the UX/UI design of their new website which we’re excited to see launch in the new year.

8. FrontFundr Rebrand

We’ve had the privilege of working with FrontFundr since 2016, and watched them grow from a new start-up venture to a game-changer and leader in the finance industry. This year the FrontFundr team decided to refresh their brand to feature this growth and we were excited when they asked us to be a part of the process. We transformed the brand to showcase their commitment to growth and innovation, reflected by the three metric bars in the new ‘f’ logo icon. A modification to the colour palette hierarchy, and the refined typography also added to the refreshed look to FrontFundr’s new brand identity.

9. Turning 30

Because what’s better than cake and confetti at work? We celebrated our thirtieth birthdays only 3 days a part from each other this year and threw ourselves a mini party. We highlighted 30 things about our twenties that we wanted to leave behind while looking onwards into our new decade as thirty-year-old mompreneurs.

10. Cheerful Pelvis website

This was one of our latest website projects taking place in the Fall of 2018 but turned out to be one of the most exciting ones to work on (and of course relatable…for reasons only other moms would understand!). The Cheerful Pelvis focuses on Holistic Physiotherapy for Pelvic Health that helps women and men deal with the root causes of trauma and pelvic floor pain. We worked closely with lead physio and founder Anniken Chadwick to create an environment where people could feel safe, hopeful and educated.

There you have it – our top 10 moments of 2018! We are so fortunate to work with amazing clients that keep us on our toes, value our dedication to good design, and really make working in the graphic design industry a daily joy. We look forward to another exciting year ahead for 2019.
